How to Choose the Perfect Coffee Cup
Aktie
Most people choose a coffee cup by how it looks. Size, weight and shape matter more than that — they change how the drink inside actually tastes and feels.
Start With the Drink, Not the Cup
The right cup size depends on what you're drinking:
- Espresso — 56ml. A cup built for a single shot keeps the crema intact and the drink hot until the last sip. Too large a cup and the espresso cools and loses concentration fast.
- Flat White — 150–180ml. Small enough to keep the ratio of espresso to microfoam tight — too large a cup and a flat white starts drinking like a weak latte.
- Cappuccino — 150–200ml. Enough room for a proper layer of foam without drowning the coffee underneath.
Weight and Grip
A cup that's too light can feel insubstantial; too heavy and it's awkward for a quick morning coffee. Handmade stoneware sits in a good middle ground — enough weight to feel considered, shaped by hand rather than moulded to a generic profile. Handle position and angle matter too: a handle that's too small or set at the wrong angle makes a cup uncomfortable no matter how good the coffee is.
Material
Stoneware, fired to 1220–1280°C, holds heat well and doesn't affect the taste of what's inside — unlike some glazes on lower-fired ceramics. It's also genuinely dishwasher and microwave safe, which matters for a cup in daily rotation. See our full guide on stoneware vs ceramic for more on why the material matters.
Handmade vs Factory-Made
A factory cup is precise but anonymous. A handmade cup, slab-built by hand, carries small variations that come from an actual person making it — more on that in our piece on handmade vs factory cups.
