Student Society Social Ideas in London: Try a Pottery Night
Share
Every society committee hits the same wall: after the bar crawl, the pub quiz and the bowling night, what's next? A pottery session is a different kind of social that works for new members and long-standing ones alike. Doppiocotto hosts student and university society socials at its working ceramics studio in Waterloo, London SE1, a 9-minute walk from Waterloo station and a 2-minute walk from Lambeth North station.
Why pottery works for a society social
- Easy for new members: working side by side gives people something to talk about, which helps when members don't know each other yet
- Not centred on alcohol: it suits members who don't drink, though you can bring your own food and drinks
- No experience needed: ceramic artist Bora Cetin guides everyone step by step
- Everyone takes something home: a mug, cup, plate or painted piece made on the night
Good for
- Welcome and freshers' socials
- Art, design and creative societies looking for a hands-on session
- End-of-term and end-of-year celebrations
- Committee socials and thank-yous for volunteers
How it works
Sessions are for groups of 2 to 20 people. You can choose hand-building with stoneware clay, pottery painting, or a mix of both, and all clay, tools and materials are provided. After the session, Bora glazes and kiln-fires every piece, and they will be ready to collect in approximately 2 weeks, so it helps to agree who will collect the pieces for the group.
Getting there
The studio is easy to reach from universities across central London. Lambeth North station (Bakerloo line) is a 2-minute walk away and Waterloo station is a 9-minute walk, close to the South Bank.
